Abstract

Ungku welcomed and expressed his appreciation for having the Prime Minister, Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman to the opening ceremony. The artwork on display is of a high order by international western standards. We have changed and we are still changing. Economic and social relations have changed more rapidly in the past six months than the past 25 years. However, our national artists seem to be more interested in keeping track with the vanguard of western art trends. They seem to be oblivious that the contribution of art can foster national unity and possibly the survival of the nation. There are many possibilities for national artists to explore the new routes if they can overcome the two obstacles that have influenced their mind from the exploration. Our industrial development is not as advanced as the western country. We should look at the world more objectively and realistically rather than indulging in the luxury of subjective indifference. We need the national artists to explore the new way to bind our multi-racial societies together. However, Ungku believes that the leaders of the nation should share the responsibility together in building a national image. The correct and enlightened cultural policy will inspire and unite the nation even without a national art gallery. Culture begins from the mind. Let us all play our parts in contributing towards the social harmony and national unity.
